Testing the composition of oil, gas, basic sediment and water has historically been a batch-type operation where the flow from a single well has been diverted from a header leading to the production separator over to a test separator. These components are measured in the test separator before returning for further processing.

As technology has advanced to provide both subsea and topside multiphase flow metering, composition measurements can be done inline and provide reliable, real-time information for each well’s fluid composition.

Emerson's Dew Divakaran

In this 2-minute video from the Offshore Technology Conference this year in Houston, Texas, Emerson’s Dew Divakaran, describes how the Roxar multiphase meter in conjunction with the Bettis Multiport Flow Selector performs integrated well testing operations.

The Multiport Flow Selector allows the diversion of fluids from a single well to a multiphase flow meter. A single Multiport Flow Selector can manifold as many as eight production well flow lines through it simultaneously. While the one outlet is isolated, the flow from the other seven is combined into a separate group outlet.

Dew points out that measuring the fluid components in real-time can spot problems with the wells earlier to address these situations more quickly. The result is improved production levels and better-planned maintenance and remediation operations.

The Multiport Flow Selector also eliminates many of the valves, valve actuators and associated complex piping required in conventional manifolds. Dew notes this can bring up to 40% capital expenditure (CAPEX) savings. The simpler configuration also means less maintenance, which translates into ongoing operations expenditure (OPEX) savings.
