At the recent Emerson Exchange conference, a scenario-based exhibit demonstrated how technology, communications and enabled experts can fundamentally change the massive effort of planning and executing turnarounds, a.k.a. shutdowns and outages.

In this 2:39 YouTube video, Digital Transformation Experience – Turnarounds, Emerson’s John Sanders describes scenes from this exhibit and how these projects could be better planned and executed.

John describes the importance of the use of a digital walkdown application and service. It enables the project team to prioritize work scope while digitizing the asset installed base in real time so that they can increase scope assurance, avoid schedule risks, and ultimately reduce costs.

During the execution of the turnaround, data collected from the automation and process assets is sent to Plantweb Insight applications to perform predictive analytics. This helps the turnaround execution team know what work needs to be done and where so that they can make data-driven decisions. These better decisions lead to reduced safety risks, saved time and money, and reduced scope.

John next describes the startup phase of the project once the turnaround activities have been completed. The Emerson Mobile Service and Command Center is where the Emerson experts perform on-site maintenance and on-site automation procurement. This command center also acts as a central point where all turnaround asset data are monitored and analyzed by the experts giving the project team the tools, coordination and confidence they need throughout the entire turnaround.
