I received an email from the 2010 Emerson Global Users Exchange Board about a few errors and omissions in the Friday Emerson Exchange Today newspaper from the recent event. Here’s a link to the corrected version.

I wanted to pass along the changes to everyone in case you were not on the email distribution.

The Friday edition highlighted a successful Lubrizol project with the presentation, SAP to DeltaV Integration. This however was not the basis for Lubrizol’s selection as winner of the Emerson 2010 PlantWeb Excellence award.

“Lubrizol Project Garners PlantWeb Excellence Award” is based on Lubrizol’s Online Batch Analytics project, which was submitted and presented by Bob Wojewodka, Technology Manager and Process Improvement Team Leader for Lubrizol. Here’s the revised article:

The Lubrizol Corp. represented by Robert Wojewodka, Technology Manager, Process Improvement Team Leader, accepted the 2010 PlantWeb Excellence Award for exceptional application of PlantWeb technologies during the Thursday, Sept. 30, awards luncheon at Emerson Exchange in San Antonio. The project was “On-line Batch Analytics.”

Lubrizol and Emerson Process Management have worked together over the last three years to develop and install a beta version of Emerson’s on-line batch analytics. The company constantly develops new formulations to maintain competitive edge. These formulations must be developed as a business recipe in the enterprise system and moved through a defined process to the shop floor turning them into control recipes that DeltaV can understand. This is where on-line batch analytics enters the picture.

Following initial development, this new functionality went through a series of successful field trials at the Lubrizol, Rouen, France plant. Batch Analytics enables turning data into intelligence. Wojewodka says, “Data comes into the system from the field, and we turn it into additional information to investigate process relationships on what is happening in the unit. This information is then turned into knowledge as we use descriptive modeling to tell us ‘why it happened.’ Intelligence comes from predictive modeling to tell us ‘what will happen’ to allow operators and engineers to take action to improve operations. This functionality gives them a view into process relationships and potential impacts on product quality that they have never had before.”

“The great creativity of this application makes it a standout,” said Steven Sonnenberg, Executive Vice President of Emerson and Business Leader, Emerson Process Management. “The award recognizes implementations that enable companies to tie process variables not only to each other, but also to end quality and business requirements. Lubrizol demonstrated superior methodologies for doing this.”

Fixes to omissions include:

Matthew Ray, Emerson Process Management, should have been listed as a co-presenter on the Best in Conference session 11-279, “Online Overhaul: Technicians Take on Technology to Provide Instant Access to BP Automation Upgrades”.

John Dubec, BP, should have been listed as a co-presenter on the Best in Conference session 3-202, “Tuning in on Asphalt Viscosity Blending with Micro Motion and DeltaV”.

The Emerson Exchange Board expresses their regrets for the errors and omissions and thanks the Automation World magazine team for producing the “Exchange Today” newspaper and for making these corrections.
