I caught wind of a Foundation fieldbus free seminar series beginning in Carson, California on May 24. Additionally, there is a session the following day for automation suppliers. The end user and engineering contractor session is described as being:

…designed for process industry end users and engineering firms, the one day seminar will cover all aspects of Foundation technology business value, successful project execution, and successful system design. Leading industry end users, systems integrators, and trainers will also discuss successful installation and commissioning practices, control strategies, and operational and maintenance strategies. Each topic is discussed in detail for 45 minutes to one hour, followed immediately by a hands-on live demonstration of 15-20 minutes to reinforce the subject matter. The seminars conclude with a panel where questions will be taken from the audience.

I took a look at the seminar agenda and saw that the Fieldbus Foundation’s Larry O’Brien has assembled a group with quite a bit of Foundation fieldbus wisdom to offer. David Lancaster, a recently retired chief engineer for control systems for Bechtel Oil, Gas & Chemical and Certified Foundation Fieldbus Instructor at Trine University, will share what constitutes successful project specifications and segment designs.

John Rezabek, a process control specialist for ISP and a regular author of the ControlGlobal.com “On the Bus” column, will share his experiences with Foundation fieldbus installation and commissioning, control strategies, and single loop integrity. Here’s one of John’s presentations, Effects of Macrocycle Time and Sampling Rates on Control Loop Performance, which highlights how Foundation fieldbus with control-in-the-field (CIF) technology can be applied even on the fastest control loops.

Chuck Carter, the Fieldbus Center Director at Lee College highlights ways process manufacturers can take advantage of Foundation fieldbus operation and diagnostics to improve the performance of their processes. At the Lee College KnowTheBus.org website, they provide certified training for automation professionals.

They close the seminar with panel discussion and Q&A with Larry, David, John, and Chuck. If you ever had questions about the application of Foundation fieldbus anywhere in the lifecycle of your plant operations, you’re not likely to find a panel assembled with more combined experience. Here’s the link to the online registration for this seminar.
