The autumn season ramps up with several process automation and industry conferences, including our September 30-October 4 Emerson Exchange event to be held in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area.

Metrology for LNG ConferenceI received word of another conference, the Metrology for LNG Conference, which will take place October 17-18 in De Lindenhof in Delft, The Netherlands. Emerson’s Arjan Van Ginkel and Peter Syrnyk will be presenting at this conference.

In case the word metrology is new to you, it is the science of measurement.

Emerson's Arjan Van GinkelArjan and co-presenter Gerko Brouwer of Cryonorm Systems will present LNG Bunkering of Fjordline Ferry at Risvika Havn – MID Approved Mass-Based Measuring System. In an earlier post, LNG Fuel Custody Transfer for Marine Vessels, we highlighted some of the regulatory challenges in measuring sulfur limits and how liquefied natural gas (LNG)-based fuel can help meet these regulations. On mass-based measurements:

Arjan highlighted the importance of measuring mass instead of volume to avoid the impact (on volume) of pressure and temperature. Energy content (mega joules per kilogram) is measured in gross caloric value, for which a gas density meter may serve. And the quality of the fuel, or methane number, is measured by a gas chromatograph. The custody transfer needs to be done per the MID/OIML regulations.

Custody Transfer Metering SystemPeter will present Design Considerations for LNG Measurement Solutions. He is with the Rosemount business unit which makes a 3818 Liquid Ultrasonic flow meter that is designed for LNG applications including custody transfer, tanker loading and off-loading, liquefaction trains, storage allocation, check metering, and line balance.

Ultrasonic technology and mass-based Coriolis flow measurement that is MID-certified, that is, certified by Nederlands Meetinstituut (NMi), the notified body for testing to the guidelines of the European Instruments Directive (MID) and Issuing Authority for OIML (International Organization for Legal Metrology), are used for both LNG and heavy fuel oil (HFO) bunkering systems.

Based upon the requirements for the LNG measurement, integrated metering systems can be designed and built with the necessary project management & MID services for completing, testing, and installing the skid.

If LNG is part of your fuel use or production process, The Netherlands in October sounds like a great place to be!
