The integrity of process piping is paramount to safe operations. Corrosion and erosion monitoring, especially for processes with challenging fluids, play an important role.

This short 2:10 YouTube video, Permasense ET210 Integrity Monitoring System, shows how piping erosion and corrosion can be monitored with pipe wall thickness measurements with non-intrusive wireless sensors strapped to the pipe. These sensors are yet more building blocks in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to monitor and provide early warning to improve overall operations.

More than 10,000 of these ultrasonic, wall-thickness measurement sensors have been installed in process applications in temperatures up to 120degC. These sensors communicate via WirelessHART to analytics software, control and/or asset management systems to help spot problems before they lead to unsafe conditions.

The sensors strap on to the piping and are non-intrusive so they can be quickly installed and put into service. There is no need to remove the piping external coating for the sensors to measure pipe thickness. The sensors are installed on a wide range of piping including risers, flow lines, vessels and processing equipment. They are typically located in areas at elevated risk of corrosion and erosion such as piping elbows.

The thickness of the piping can be monitored over time to assess when a problem might develop and need to be addressed.
