At the Industrial Transformation ASIA-PACIFIC 2019 in Singapore, Emerson’s Jonas Berge shared his views on the Industrial Internet of Things as one of the key enablers for Industry 4.0.

In this quick 3:22 YouTube video, Industrial Automation Asia Interview with Mr Jonas Berge, Emerson, Jonas notes that many manufacturers do not want to extend their digital transformation or Industry 4.0 initiatives beyond the boundaries of their production facilities to reduce cybersecurity concerns.

He explains that framework to undertake these initiatives are usually already in place. The base is the plant historian which is already collecting vast amounts of data from the control system and other connected devices and systems. Often the need is to extend this data source with reliability-related data.

The other key part of the framework is the OPC-UA (Unified Architecture) standard. It is at the core of the NAMUR Open Architecture. Jonas explains that this is the best architecture for digital transformation initiatives.

This NAMUR Open Architecture concept is used in Emerson’s Plantweb digital ecosystem. He shared that with these Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)-based technologies that manufacturers and producers can think big, start small and scale fast.

While the Plantweb digital ecosystem has all the building blocks to address the big vision, it’s best to build a roadmap, generate early successes in return on investment on small pieces of the vision, and scale to address the next pieces in the roadmap. Jonas notes that there are many modular, fully tested solutions in the Plantweb ecosystem in areas to improve safety, reliability, energy & emissions, and production.
