Flow measurements are critical in many manufacturing and production processes. One example is in filling processes where accuracy is important for safety, reliability and quality.

On-Demand 2-Wire Coriolis Meter Transmitter WebinarIn an on-demand Chemical Engineering magazine webinar, Advancements in 2-Wire Coriolis Technology, Emerson’s Anthony Gentile joins Chemical Engineering’s Scott Jenkins to discuss how 2-wire Coriolis flow meter improves reliability by providing an accurate mass flow and density measurement.

After Scott’s introduction of Anthony and his background, Anthony opened with a poll question about users’ challenges regarding legacy unreliable 2-wire flow points and replacing them. Respondents identified limited capital expenditure (CAPEX) budgets and a combination of that, available rack space and non-centrally located power as the biggest challenges.

He explained that the value of 2-wire Coriolis over traditional Coriolis mass flow and density measurements is its ability to use power and signal over the same two wires to save on cabling installation costs and reusing existing wiring for replacement flow measurement technologies. Coriolis measurements replace the accuracy and rangeability limitations in differential pressure (DP) flow meters, the reliability issues in turbine meters and the reliability issues in positive displacement (PD) meters.

Anthony shared examples of lowering project CAPEX through the elimination of AC power installation expenses. For a simple installation where the AC power is within 150 feet of the Coriolis meter, the savings from engineering, installation and commissioning was $17,000USD. A more complex installation where power is 500 feet away, the costs were $51,100USD.

Micro Motion 4200 2-Wire Coriolis TransmitteThe Micro Motion 4200 2-Wire Coriolis Transmitter includes basic and zero-configuration Smart Meter Verification (SMV), wireless THUM adapter options, availability for use in up to SIL 2 safety applications with a single meter and SIL 2 with multiple meters, integrated data historian and the ability to rotate the display based on mounting position from the software.

SMV diagnostics enable in-situ testing of the Coriolis flow meter’s integrity including all the transmitter diagnostics. This verification testing can be performed on demand or automatically scheduled—locally at the meter and remotely. The SMV testing can be used to extend the time between proof tests in safety instrumented functions.

Watch the webinar for more as Anthony explains some key concepts including Zero flow, to Zero or not to Zero (use the Zero Verification tool), historical audit trail, and more.
