pH control can be extremely challenging due to exceptional nonlinearity and sensitivity particularly when strong acids and strong bases are used. Advances in electrode design and signal selection can greatly help. The need to reduce oscillations from valve resolution limit and backlash can be addressed by valve design and use of a PID feature.

PID Algorithm ISA Technical Reference
At AIChE Spring21+17th GCPS, James Beall presented, An Activity Report on the Newly Formed ISA 5.9 Subcommittee on the PID Algorithm, to address the lack of no standards or technical references related to the Proportional, Integral, Derivative (PID) control algorithm.
Breakthroughs in Bioprocess Modeling and Control
Emerson’s Greg McMillan, teaming with Christopher Stuart, Rehman Fazeem, Zachary Sample and Timothy Schieffer have updated and revised the 2nd edition of the book, New Directions in Bioprocess Modeling and Control.
Improving Control Valve Response Specifications
Control valve response is a critical factor in successful control strategies and process variability. In a ControlGlobal.com article, Responsible control valve response, Emerson’s Greg McMillan and James Beall discussed the efforts underway to include valve responsiveness into the ISA 75.25 Control Valve Dynamic Testing standard.
Control Strategies for Process Dynamic Responses
Greg McMillan’s presentation, Process Effects on Control explores how various process types affect objectives, tuning, and performance. Greg opened noting that control loops have many different objectives.
Digital Twin Technology for Bioreactor Control and Optimization
At Texas A&M University’s Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center’s 76th Instrumentation and Automation Symposium, Emerson’s Greg McMillan presented on Bioreactor Control and Optimization using Digital Twin technology.
Advancing the Automation Engineering Profession
Greg McMillan presented at the AIChE Spring Meeting on the current state of automation engineering professionals and recommended solutions for advancing the profession.
Process Control Educational Recordings
One decade ago I collaborated with Process Automation Hall of Fame member, Greg McMillan to do a series of webinars on basics of process control.
Optimizing Energy Usage in Multi-Fuel Boilers
Steam is a critical part of many process manufacturing processes and the energy to produce it can be a significant source of operational costs. I recently caught up with process automation hall-of-fame member Greg McMillan and Emerson's Scott Pettigrew at the Emerson...
Setpoint Lead-Lag Question and Answer
I wanted to share this question and answer on setpoint lead-lag, from the Mentoring Engineers discussion group in the Emerson Exchange 365 community. The question: …one of the options you recommend for eliminating overshoot at setpoint changes is using a setpoint...
