At the Emerson Exchange 2025 Conference, Emerson’s Douglas Kinnaird presented “Use DeltaV SaaS SCADA to Manage and Control Your Remote Assets”. Here is his presentation abstract.

Gain insights into Emerson’s DeltaV SaaS SCADA platform, a cloud-based, multi-tenant solution for managing dispersed assets. Whether for multi-location IIoT, edge devices, or single assets, it enables remote monitoring and control. The cloud architecture eliminates on-prem IT needs, ensuring faster deployment, evergreen features, scalable solutions, and subscription pricing. DeltaV SaaS SCADA offers an alarm module for manage-by-exception, customizable HMI screens, analytics dashboards, a data historian for long-term storage, and mobile access with Data Exchange for flexible workflows.

Douglas opened by describing what DeltaV SaaS SCADA is. It’s a Multi-Tenant, Cloud Native, IoT Platform, delivered via a Software-As-A-Service Business Model. It is a Cloud-based SCADA solution that provides a secure means for data collection, analysis, and reporting, interfacing with a wide range of supplier-agnostic sensors, PLCs, RTUs, IPCs, controllers, and other devices.

DeltaV SaaS SCADA provides multiple data egress options to simplify data collection and consolidation across an enterprise, making it an ideal solution for monitoring and controlling geographically dispersed assets.

He shared some impressive statistics. Across 20 countries worldwide, DeltaV SaaS SCADA is monitoring 3.3 million sensor points, with 140 million daily readings, 11,000 daily logins, and nearly 5,000 users.

DeltaV SaaS SCADA is used across a wide variety of industries including upstream oil & gas, water/waste water, utilities, food, industrial, life sciences and natural gas distribution (where specific applications include district station monitoring, end-of-line pressure monitoring, pressure relief valve monitoring, odorizer monitoring, Barton chart replacement, and volume corrector monitoring).   The common use case across all industry applications is remote monitoring and control of geographically dispersed assets.

The DeltaV SaaS Platform architecture encompasses field devices and edge gateways, connectivity options, configuration, identity and security management, message processing, data historian, performance and capacity management, end-user interfaces, and data egress options.

The platform aligns with Emerson’s Boundless Automation vision that integrates operations across the intelligent field, edge, and cloud to empower enterprise-wide visibility, optimization, and autonomous operations. DeltaV SaaS SCADA integrates operations to make all data instantly accessible, understandable, and usable for analytics, innovation, and performance improvement.

From a cybersecurity perspective, the platform was made for the internet from day one. It safely bridges operational technology (OT) with the enterprise IT environment. Human- and machine-based active monitoring and log analysis in real-time help with early detection and threat monitoring.

Security is integrated throughout the development process, and the platform is kept up to date with the latest operating system updates, virus definitions, and patch management. Penetration testing is performed with continuous perimeter and asset scanning to maintain high security vigilance.

A powerful MQTT-based data egress method to stream field device data, formatted/contextualized by DeltaV SaaS SCADA to a 3rd-party MQTT client or broker, helps efficiently share enriched field device data with other Enterprise applications. It supports a very large number of connected devices for small and large-scale applications. This data is secured via TLS encryption.

Douglas shared some use cases, including original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that have incorporated DeltaV SaaS SCADA to enhance their product offerings through remote surveillance, control, and optimization, as well as using the platform capabilities to economically scale their managed service businesses.

One of these OEM examples involved an industrial boiler manufacturer that uses the platform to remotely monitor industrial boilers located across a vast geographic footprint. This remote surveillance and control helps reduce downtime and maintenance costs while improving customer satisfaction. The data collection and analysis are used for predictive maintenance and failure forecasting. Operational efficiency levels are proactively measured to minimize fuel costs and asset productivity.

The upstream oil and gas industry is the most common application where DeltaV SaaS SCADA provides a complete, cloud-based SCADA system, used for monitoring wells, artificial lift equipment, tanks, rotating equipment, facilities, and collector pipelines.

For natural gas distributors, DeltaV SaaS SCADA installations monitor critical assets across the distribution network, enabling operators to view critical data, receive alarms, and use enhanced reporting and data trending capabilities.

In the Life Sciences sector, applications range from hospitals monitoring for N2O leaks for reporting purposes to health gas suppliers using DeltaV SaaS SCADA to monitor their health gas delivery services to hospitals.

Douglas summed up his presentation by saying that the platform connects to anything, anywhere, anytime, and is accessible to any authorized users.
