This is one for those electrical engineers out there. When I was interning on offshore oil & gas platforms in my college years back in the 1980s, I learned there was a lot more than just making an electrical connection between electrical devices (motors, sensors, etc.) and the remote terminal unit or PLC.

There were lots of considerations like the hazardous location rating of the connection points, the types of cables to carry the signals and the connectors to make sure the moist & salty air of the Gulf of Mexico did not corrode the wires and create intermittent or bad connections.

Emerson's Jim Tehan

I was reminded of the importance of these connectors in a new 3:11 YouTube video, Appleton and O-Z/Gedney for Liquidtight Flexible Metal Conduit.

In this video, Emerson’s Jim Tehan shows a wide range of liquidtight and vibration-proof connectors and fittings for wet, challenging & hazardous locations like what I experienced in my offshore days.

Jim opens noting that 18 lines of Appleton and O-Z/Gedney connectors are available to fit the specifics of your application. These can range from hooking up air conditioners in commercial and residential applications to motors and sensors in industrial process applications.

These connectors are suitable for Class I, Division 2 and Zone 2 hazardous locations as well as Class II and III locations. They come in many sizes, angles—straight, 45- & 90-degree bends, and materials—steel, malleable iron, aluminum, stainless steel, zinc diecast, and nylon.

This video is a great overview of the terminology, types, and what’s available to help you make those secure electrical connections, even in the toughest environmental conditions.

It’s only too bad YouTube and videos like these weren’t around in the 1980s when I needed them!

You can learn more about conduit bodies, outlet boxes, device boxes, cable glands and other fittings for any environment in the Electrical Fittings section of Emerson.com and/or with our fittings experts at the October 1-5, 2018 Emerson Exchange conference in San Antonio, Texas.
