We know that manufacturers and producers undergoing digital transformation journeys need to consider people, processes and technologies along the path to better performance. Technology alone won’t cause a transformation, but it plays a very important role.

The Plantweb digital ecosystem is a scalable portfolio of technologies, software and services that can be applied in the areas of production, reliability, safety and energy management by empowering plant staff with insights and actionable information. Enabling technologies include asset health prioritization, secure access to analytics and remote expertise, secure mobile app and data transport, wireless and wired digital sensors, built-for-purpose asset monitoring, and reliability and energy management analytics.

I caught up with Emerson’s Brian Joe about one of the analytical tools in the Plantweb digital ecosystem portfolio, Plantweb Insight. Its role in the ecosystem is to provide diagnostics of plant assets and equipment that enable faster, more effective responses to issues. It does this by sharing timely and actionable information and insights about abnormal situations, asset state, asset health, energy costs, and emissions loss.

Plantweb InsightThrough a web-based interface, specific applications for steam traps, pumps, heat exchangers, pressure relief devices, and more alert plant personnel of assets that need attention, before they result in lost production, increased maintenance costs, or dangerous conditions.

These applications have a common dashboard of the asset class being monitored. The Plantweb Insight apps give an aggregated view of the entire asset class and the most important insights. These insights will vary from application to application with examples including asset status, asset health, energy costs, emissions loss, critical alerts, etc. A brief trending of these key insights is available for historical tracking.

For example, in the steam trap monitoring application, conditions such as blow through, plugging and flooding are tracked, timestamped and communicated through alerts. Economic and environmental impacts of these failure conditions are displayed. And based on severity, a prioritized maintenance list is available for planning and execution.
