Emerson's Megan Wiens

Let’s start the week with a nice “how-to” video, How to Configure the Rosemount 3051S Plugged Impulse Line Diagnostic. Emerson’s Megan Wiens shows how to configure the Rosemount 3051S Plugged Impulse Line Diagnostic to help prevent this plugging condition which can lead to reduced measurement accuracy, plant efficiency, and product quality.

Megan opens the video showing the Interactive Plant Environment in Emerson’s Rosemount Shakopee Minnesota facility. She shows a Rosemount 3051S transmitter with advanced diagnostics mounted in the process and a configurator tool, the AMS Trex Device Communicator.

With the Trex device connected to the 3051S, Megan shows how to turn on statistical process monitoring (SPM) inside the 3051S. When turning on SPM in a transmitter, the transmitter should be first removed from automatic control. The Trex device communicator provides this warning.

SPM works in two modes. Standard deviation and mean which is best suited for the 3051S’ use in differential pressure (DP) level measurement and pressure measurement applications. The second mode, coefficient of variation works best in DP flow applications. The transmitter for this demonstration is in a DP flow application, so Megan selects the coefficient of variation mode.

A timeframe of 3, 5 or 10 minutes can be selected to for SPM to learn what normal variation looks like. This provides a point of reference to compare a plugging condition against. High, medium or low sensitivity to process changes can next be selected with medium as the default value.

The final configuration step is to select when a threshold has been reached. The user can select a latched alert which will hold the alert if the threshold condition clears until it is manually reset, an unlatched alert which will appear only during an exceeded threshold condition, and an alarm which will notify the operators at the operator workstations.

Once the training is complete, the transmitter automatically runs the statistical process monitoring to help spot plugging conditions as they develop over time.
