Emerson Coriolis Flow Meters Ensure Calibration Accuracy at TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory

Emerson’s Micro Motion Coriolis ELITE flow meter installed at the TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory Advanced Multiphase Facility

TÜV SÜD National Engineering Laboratory (NEL), one of the foremost authorities on flow measurement, is using Emerson’s Micro Motion Coriolis flow meters to provide flow measurement in both its Advanced Multiphase Facility and new Water Flow Facility in East Kilbride, Glasgow.

The Coriolis flow meters are used as reference meters for water, oil and nitrogen lines used to calibrate a broad range of single-phase and multiphase flow meters. These Coriolis meters met NEL’s selection criteria for reference meters, both in terms of accuracy and reliability.

The Advanced Multiphase Facility, which was opened in 2019, is the largest multiphase and wet gas facility in the world, offering the highest gas and liquid flow rates at any multiphase testing site. The state-of-the-art facility supports companies operating within the energy and oil and gas sectors to develop, test and verify multiphase flow instrumentation. The facility is designed to replicate typical field conditions of a broad range of applications and measurement challenges, such as well production optimisation and fiscal accounting.

The Water Flow Facility, which was commissioned in January 2021, has fully automated process control and data acquisition. The Emerson meters offer additional information on flow conditions, which NEL have utilised within the new process control system.

In total, fifteen of the Micro Motion ELITE Coriolis Peak Performance flow meters are used as reference meters to support testing lines varying in size from 0.25″ to 8″, flow rates of up to 550m3/h of oil or water and 358 MMscfd of gas, and pressures up to 140 bar. The Coriolis flow meters provide measurement uncertainty of just 0.1% rate of flow, helping to ensure the Water Flow Facility exceed the requirements of the ISO 17025 standard. Emerson’s Micro Motion 5700 Coriolis Transmitter delivers measurements to the data acquisition system over an Ethernet data communications network.

The Advanced Multiphase Facility provides companies within the subsea and wet gas sector with a world class testing facility, supporting their research and product development. To maximise the validity and performance of our test rigs, it is essential to minimise measurement uncertainty, which is why we are using Coriolis flow meter technology as a reference for our testing systems. The exceptional accuracy of these devices enables us to achieve measurement uncertainty of 0.05% of the flow rate, enabling us to provide our customers with the performance required for their instrumentation evaluations.
