Yesterday, we looked at some applications for wireless measurement in upstream and downstream oil production. Today, let’s look specifically at wireless level measurement in oil & gas production.

In this quick 1:48 YouTube video, Wireless Level Measurement Solutions in the Oil Fields, Emerson’s Matt Brummer explains how the wireless Rosemount 3308 guided wave radar and 2160 vibrating fork level switch helps measure levels in storage tanks in onshore oil fields.

Matt opens noting that level measurement is used to remotely see tank levels and to provide overspill protection. The measurements are also used to schedule the haulers to come and empty the tanks.

Widely dispersed onshore production fields and their storage tanks make wireless level measurement a good solution. Battery life can be up to 10 years based on the update rates required in the measurement devices. Matt also noted that many issues associated with wiring such as grounding and lightning issues are avoided with wireless devices.
