At the 2018 Ovation Users’ Group Conference, Emerson’ Nick Koonce and Mike Ames presented on some of the tools and data that Ovation control system users can use for lifecycle planning. It included a step-by-step demonstration along with an explanation of the data (format and content) focused on:

  • Lifecycle planning tools & data such as System Gather & Registration Utility
  • Considerations/limitations/things to avoid
  • Cybersecurity
  • Best practices, what to include in the project, i.e., training, SureService modules, etc.
  • Checklists available for both Emerson & end users

Nick opened by noting how power and water facilities wanted formalized guidance and support, maximize operational safety, reliability & efficiency, reduce the total cost of ownership and extend the life of the automation equipment.

Lifecycle planning and guides, multi-year & multi-site implementation planning, budget and project planning are required to meet these needs.

A trend toward selecting strategic partners is underway. Companies share their profitability and reliability requirements, standardization & optimization approaches, services, integration of other equipment such as PLCs, and security.

When assessing the criticality of assets in the operation versus the vulnerability to failure or obsolescence, it often shows that many assets including the control system are both critical and potentially vulnerable.

Return on investment for reducing these risks is a function of capital efficiency, operational efficiency and opportunities enabled to improve operational performance by more modern technology.

Lifecycle planning has changed from a 15+ years and replace to a periodic maintenance on the control system for the life of the plant. Each component in the system has a lifecycle. These lifecycles are different from very short security-specific components (2-4 years) to very long I/O lifecycles (~20 years).

Product support has a window from being to current through the phases active, maintenance and retired. Much us based on the lifecycle of the underlying operating system. A system Evergreen program should be performed every 5 years to update hardware and software revisions. The Ovation Preventive Maintenance Guide on the Ovation Users’ Group website helps with this planning process.
