An Emerson team of flow meter and instrumentation experts, including Maria Höglund, Jason Leapley, Ingo Nickel, and Sean Collins-Dippel, gathered to present “Harness the Power of Advanced Diagnostics to Gain More Insight into Your Process” at the Emerson Exchange 2025 Conference. Here is their presentation abstract.

Advanced diagnostics can expose hidden variability within your process, helping reveal optimization opportunities that improve product quality and increase throughput. New diagnostic technology provides operators a powerful tool to proactively identify and alert to potential process upsets earlier than ever before. This reduces the likelihood of a shutdown or failure which could result in injury, equipment damage, or environmental concerns. Leveraging sophisticated data from your flow meters and instrumentation we’re helping operators reduce costs and minimize time spent in the field. Come learn about the latest advancements in diagnostic technology for Emerson’s temperature, pressure, level, and flow meters.

Sean opened by highlighting the improved operational results that can be achieved with advanced diagnostics. These include reduced maintenance costs, improved product quality, increased process uptime, increased throughput, and reduced waste & rework.

Organizations are also challenged with doing more with less headcount, reduced CAPEX & OPEX budgets, and knowledge gaps as experienced personnel retire.

Here are some of the advanced diagnostics available for Rosemount pressure devices.

Maria came up to discuss the Rosemount radar level advanced diagnostics, which include proof test with a wizard and report  for safety-related applications, Smart Echo Level Test to test the system alarm respons with help of a simulated echo, Smart Meter Verification (SMV), which performs a comprehensive health check in situ to maintain confidence in the measurements, and Signal Quality Metrics for preventive maintenance when there is a risk for build-up or abnormal surface conditions. Monitoring the echo curves in radar level transmitters with the alert historian provides data for advanced troubleshooting.

Jason came up next to discuss advanced diagnostics in Micro Motion Coriolis mass flow meters. Process analytics include event logs, data historians, and audit logs for configuration, zero, and sensor data. Drive gain is the amount of energy required to keep the tubes vibrating at their natural frequency, which translates to an easy method to determine if the meter is experiencing two phase flow conditions. In situ SMV is also available in the meter to verify performance under normal operating conditions, allowing it to be quickly run without interrupting the process.

Ingo next came up to discuss the advanced diagnostic for Flexim non-intrusive ultrasonic flow meters. These include transmitter health and process intelligence diagnostics. Baseline diagnostics are established at installation and compared over time for regular verification against the baseline. From a process intelligence perspective, these comparisons against the baseline help to detect potential faults early and the need for maintenance.

The diagnostic tools help assess accuracy and stability during installation, facilitate troubleshooting in case of signal loss, provide surveillance of trends related to changes in signal quality caused by mutated process conditions, and prepare commissioning control reports.

Changes in the velocity of the ultrasonic signal can also detect fouling in the pipe, such as wax buildup.
