Why this matters now

As life sciences teams strive to achieve operational excellence, many focus on overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) as a primary performance metric. On the surface, this approach seems logical. If equipment is operating efficiently, it is easy to assume everything else is running smoothly.

Not necessarily.

As life sciences automation expert Christian Berg explains in a recent article in Pharmaceutical Processing World:

“Bottlenecks come in many shapes and sizes, and many of them are not specific to equipment functionality. Therefore, if the operations team in the previous example is performing many of its tasks manually, they likely cannot manage the full spectrum of multivariate data necessary to see how OEE, or lack thereof, truly impacts the process.”

This highlights a common misconception: excellent equipment performance does not automatically translate into excellent operational performance.
