Delivering Measurement Confidence at Extreme Temperatures in Base Oil Production

In base oil production, quality and reliability is non‑negotiable. When you’re operating in high‑capacity refineries and producing Group I and Group II base oils for global markets, even small measurement inaccuracies can have a cascading impact on product quality, efficiency, and long‑term reliability.

Across the Middle East, we regularly speak with producers who are pushing their operations harder than ever—higher temperatures, heavier byproducts, and increasing expectations for consistency and sustainability. One recent project stands out as a clear example of what’s possible when the right measurement technology is applied in the most demanding conditions.

The challenge: Accurate measurement where others fall short

The producer we are referring to is a leading base oil manufacturer in the region and the only virgin base oil producer in its home country. Operating multiple large‑scale refineries, the company faced a familiar but formidable challenge: how to achieve reliable, repeatable flow measurement across several critical by‑product streams operating well above 350 °C.

These streams—including fractionator bottoms, waxy lube oil, and overflash—present extreme conditions that push many traditional flow technologies beyond their limits. In this case, process temperatures reached up to 390 °C, and the producer needed a solution that could maintain accuracy and stability without disrupting production or adding unnecessary maintenance burden.

At the same time, the organization was focused on modernizing its measurement infrastructure—supporting long‑term operational excellence, improving asset visibility, and aligning with broader sustainability goals.

Why ultra‑high‑temperature Coriolis measurement matters

This is exactly the type of application where Coriolis technology delivers distinct advantages. Unlike inferential flow technologies, Coriolis meters provide direct mass flow and density measurement, eliminating errors introduced by changes in pressure, temperature, or fluid properties—an essential capability in base oil refining.

For this application, the producer selected Micro Motion™ ELITE™ Coriolis Flow Meters paired with the Micro Motion 5700 Transmitter. These meters are specifically designed to perform in extreme thermal environments, supporting process temperatures up to 426 °C.

Just as important, the ELITE sensor delivers best‑in‑class accuracy, repeatability, and long‑term stability—helping operators maintain confidence in their measurements even as process conditions fluctuate.

Operational impact: Confidence, reliability, and visibility

Once installed, the benefits were immediate and measurable. The producer gained improved confidence in critical measurements across all high‑temperature by‑product streams, supporting consistent base oil quality.

Advanced diagnostics and Smart Meter Verification played a key role as well. By providing greater insight into meter health, the team was able to reduce manual sampling and recalibration, improve safety, and simplify maintenance planning—all while keeping the refinery running continuously with limited shutdown windows.

From an operational perspective, the result was higher reliability, reduced troubleshooting time, and a more future‑ready measurement infrastructure that supports both current production demands and long‑term growth.

Looking ahead: Building resilience into refinery measurement

For us, this project reinforces an important point: in base oil production, measurement technology isn’t just about meeting today’s requirements, it’s about enabling confident operations under the most demanding conditions.

By investing in ultra‑high‑temperature Coriolis measurement, producers can protect product quality, improve asset performance, and create a strong foundation for operational excellence well into the future.

At Emerson, we’re proud to support customers across the Middle East and Africa as they tackle some of the toughest flow measurement challenges in the industry—and this application is a powerful example of what’s possible when precision and reliability truly matter.
