From Simulation to Splashdown: The Testing That Powered Artemis II

by | Apr 17, 2026 | Test & Measurement | 0 comments

The Artemis II mission successfully completed its 695,081-mile, 10-day journey last week, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. A tremendous amount of engineering and testing contributed to its success.

A LinkedIn post from Emerson’s test & measurement business shares the story of the extensive testing involved in the project at the NI Connect 2023 Conference.

At #NIConnect 2023, Lockheed Martin Space gave us a glimpse into what that really takes for the Orion spacecraft—the very spacecraft carrying the #ArtemisII astronauts today—millions of test cases, systems running around the clock, and a relentless commitment to getting it right.

As we celebrate 50 years of NI innovation, we also celebrate decades of customers, like Lockheed Martin Space, who have inspired us with their ambition and incredible feats of engineering.

Don’t miss NI Connect 2026 in Fort Worth, Texas for more stories like this, where innovation and test come together for real-world impact. https://bit.ly/3PI78ne #NI50

Watch the keynote presentation that highlights the extensive testing for the Orion spacecraft, including the ability to withstand 5000 degF heat generated from 25,000 mph re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Products such as NI LabVIEW and NI PXI Systems were used to develop models and simulations to ensure the spacecraft’s safe and reliable performance. Millions of test cases were performed 24×7.

Congratulations to all involved in the mission’s success!
