Onshore Oil Storage Tank Wireless Level Measurement - Emerson Automation Experts

Onshore Oil Storage Tank Wireless Level Measurement

Yesterday, we looked at some applications for wireless measurement in upstream and downstream oil production. Today, let’s look specifically at wireless level measurement in oil & gas production.

Emerson's Matt Brummer

In this quick 1:48 YouTube video, Wireless Level Measurement Solutions in the Oil Fields, Emerson’s Matt Brummer explains how the wireless Rosemount 3308 guided wave radar and 2160 vibrating fork level switch helps measure levels in storage tanks in onshore oil fields.

Matt opens noting that level measurement is used to remotely see tank levels and to provide overspill protection. The measurements are also used to schedule the haulers to come and empty the tanks.

Widely dispersed onshore production fields and their storage tanks make wireless level measurement a good solution. Battery life can be up to 10 years based on the update rates required in the measurement devices. Matt also noted that many issues associated with wiring such as grounding and lightning issues are avoided with wireless devices.

  1. There are lots of other “missing measurements” around tanks for which there are wireless transmitters you can use for greater productivity (less manual gauging), improved storage space utilization, improved safety, reduced environmental incidents, and reduced risk of tank damage. This can be achieved by deploying wireless transmitters to measure product level/inventory, floating roof tilt, dyke valve position, hydrocarbon leak, overfill, sump pit level, floating roof water, and feedback of transfer valve position line-up.

Plants are being modernized with plant-wide WirelessHART infrastructure for Pervasive Sensing applications. This wireless instrument network can be shared by all the sensors on the tank as well as hundreds or thousands of other sensors around plant to improve reliability, maintenance productivity, energy efficiency, and to reduce HS&E incidents and response time. See further explanation in this article:

    Beyond the Control Room

For an existing plant, pervasive sensing can be added using wireless. For a new plant, pervasive sensing infrastructure beyond the P&ID has to be planned from the very beginning of a project. Below are a few more articles:
