I’ve been giving thought to everything I heard this week at the 2019 ARC Industry Forum now that I’m back in Austin. I think what stands out the most is how to prioritize steps on a digital transformation journey. I captured it in this tweet:

Advice for #DigitalTransformation at #ARCForum: anchor yourself with value to customer. Meet them where they’re at.

If your vision is formed by how you want create value for your customers, then start by prioritizing the actions that need to be taken to realize this vision.

Think for a moment how travel has changed in just the past couple of years. It’s easy to secure your reservations through your smart phone, bypassing the former practice of a phone call with a travel agent.

You can get your airline or other form of transportation tickets electronically on your smart phone, bypassing the check-in counters and kiosks.

When you arrive to your destination, you can use ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft which can be less expensive and less time consuming than renting a car, paying for parking, refilling with gas, etc.

With some of the hotel chains you can check in, check out, and use your smart phone as a door key to skip the time needed to stop by the front desk.

In all these examples, your travel experience was made easier and more seamless. Each transformative innovation prioritized what would be more valuable for in terms of costs, time savings and/or convenience.

Reference examples like these when you’re justifying digital transformation projects along the path to creating value for your customers.

“The value of digitalization is not in the technology itself but in the cross-functional collaboration it enables.” @AspenTech #ARCForum

…you may find that better collaboration and improved performance come along with the efforts.
