TED magazine: Powered On--Without PauseReliable, always-on electrical power is critical for most manufacturers. In a TED magazine article, Powered on—Without Pause, Emerson’s Mark Dziedzic explains the role of power conditioning to minimize or eliminate potential interruptions.

Mark notes that these power conditioners, such as what’s available in SolaHD power conversion and power quality products:

…recreate a well-regulated sinusoidal waveform that is isolated from input disturbances including impulses, swells, momentary brownouts, sags, and severe waveform distortion, thereby providing for uninterrupted input power needs except for a total loss of power… For a total loss of power, we then offer uninterruptible power supplies in various topologies to provide sufficient backup power to allow for controlled shutdowns of critical operations for easy restart and to minimize losses from scrap and downtime.

Some technology advancements have occurred:

…from the use of analog components and magnetics to more electronics-based solutions. Some innovations have included super-capacitor-style UPS for momentary outages to the use of flywheel technology for storage of kinetic energy to be used later.

The goal of this power conditioning equipment is:

…on maintaining uptime and limiting outages or at least minimize their effects.

From a digital transformation perspective, the incorporation of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies:

…continues to expand into many product categories as it makes financial sense… It’s allowing for more predictive maintenance to ensure reliable uptime.
