In a post last summer, Portable Vibration Analyzer-Human Centered Design Style, we highlighted the latest advancements in handheld vibration analyzers. Since that time, Emerson’s Drew Mackley has been showing the device to reliability professionals around the globe.

The feedback about improved usability from the human centered design (HCD) approach has been extremely positive. Given the focus of people he speaks with, the natural question he most often hears is, “It’s pretty, but is it tough?”

A reliability professional wants the tools that he and his team use to be dependable and ready to go when required for the route-based maintenance schedules.

Drew and the team decided to show the reliability in a series of durability tests. In this quick, 1:55 YouTube video, you see the durability tests from dropping it off a table, to burying it in mud and in snow, to tossing it down a flight of stairs.

Like the old Timex commercials, “it takes a licking and keeps on ticking.”

I don’t know, but this may start a whole new genre of YouTube videos on how to abuse your CSI 2140 Machinery Health Analyzer!
