20140403-095528.jpgEmerson’s Klaus Erni shared some “how to” tips for using digital bus technologies in the DeltaV system.

He opened how Profibus DP can be used today since the DeltaV v10.3 release. This technology is used quite a bit in pharmaceutical & biotech manufacturing as well as specialty chemicals manufacturing.

With DeltaV version 12.3, Profibus DP 2.28 has been fully tested and supported. The mapping from the Profibus DP GSD files from suppliers such as Stahl contain all the mapping which are automatically configured in the DeltaV system. It is no longer a manual configuration operation.

For Profibus PA was originally done as a slave only with the information coming from devices to a DeltaV system. Since the 12.3.1 DeltaV release, the PA devices can be interacted with by both DeltaV and AMS Device Manager through the use of EDD technology. This integration uses the Pepperl + Fuchs Profibus Power Hub and Segment Coupler. The Profibus PA slave devices are listed in the DeltaV library.

Klaus next highlighted the Virtual I/O Module (VIM) which provides Ethernet-based I/O data into the DeltaV controllers. The VIM, made by Mynah Technologies, will be made by the DeltaV technology team and expected to be available this year. It’s backward compatible to DeltaV 10.3.1 and supports the Profinet protocol.

The VIM supports Ethernet-based devices running Profinet up to 254 devices (128 in a redundant ring configuration) on the network. Supplier specific tools to work with the devices can connect to this network.

Klaus showed an architecture where a Stahl Ethernet module running the Profinet protocol can communicate back with a switch to DeltaV across a fiber optic connection. This is an alternative to a standard Profibus DP connection.
