BunkerLink Built for Marine Applications

In 1832, the Fresnel lens revolutionized the lighthouse. Lighthouses had been guiding ships in the U.S. since the 1700s but with the new, innovative lens, sailors could sight harbors from as far as 32 km away. Not only was Fresnel’s lens capable of throwing light farther than before, the lens was thinner and more compact than anything else available at the time. It soon became the lens of choice based on its performance and smaller footprint.

Today, GPS systems ensure flawless navigation and wireless networks carry ship-to-shore communications, including the data sets generated by Emerson Micro Motion Coriolis sensors used in marine bunkering. Coriolis mass flow technology is well-suited to heavy fuel oil (HFO) applications, particularly bunkering, where billing is based on mass. We’re proud to say that some of the leading shipping companies rely on our sensors to help them monitor and control fuel consumption and bunkering operations. And we’re also proud to say that if we’ve “gone overboard” in design capabilities for one of our products, relevant to specific applications, we’ll listen to what our customers need and work to solve the problem for them. So, when one of our marine customers found that the files generated by our ProLink software were too big to email, we went back to the software development drawing board. The result is BunkerLink, software to log and display to the process data critical to bunkering. And to suit marine communication requirements, BunkerLink produces files that can be emailed from ship to shore.

The files are smaller but we were sure to keep essential capabilities in our stand-alone software solution that enable:

• Real-time view into meter performance

• Unsurpassed measurement of density, drive gain, mass flow, temperature

• Better management of your suppliers and your own process

• Very detailed, recorded files – so if your process fails, you know why

The cost of fuel can account for as much as 70% of overall operating expenses for marine shipping companies and is projected to climb to $760 per metric ton by 2017. The lighthouse served the marine industry for a very long time, but new technologies have taken its place. With each drop of HFO becoming more expensive, insight into the volume taken onboard and consumption is growing more valuable, and the ability to employ analytics on bunkering process data back at headquarters is a must.
