Sensi-App-iPhoneI recently upgraded my home’s thermostats with the Sensi thermostat, made by the Emerson Climate Technologies business group. I mention this because human centered design (HCD) is the subject of today’s post.

Sensi thermostats are great examples of the Internet of Things combined with an intuitive user experience. I’m easily able to remotely control the temperature of my home from anywhere using a smart phone/tablet app or web page.

In earlier posts, we’ve shared process automation-related examples of products designed with a human centered design approach, such as Portable Vibration Analyzer-Human Centered Design Style and Simplifying Human Interfaces via Dashboards.

A human centered design approach requires collaboration and usability testing with users of the technology to refine and improve the technology.

Like in previous years, several of the Emerson technology teams will be performing usability testing with the end users who attend the October 12-16 Emerson Exchange conference in Denver, Colorado. Register by this Wednesday, September 16 and save $200 USD.

Emerson's Christina Koffskey

I caught up with Emerson’s Christina Koffskey who shared with me some of the usability testing that will be done at this year’s conference.

Members from the DeltaV, Fisher, Micro Motion and Rosemount brand teams will be involved in this testing to receive your feedback. Overall, testing will be performed on 13 products, ranging from a new flow computer and configurator to a new operator interface for Rosemount TankMaster.

Christina shared that if you participate in the testing you will receive a $20 store gift card and will be entered into a drawing to win a 128GB iPad mini 3 in a Class 1/Division 2 case.

The testing will take place Monday October 12 through Thursday October 15 from 8am to 7pm on the Ballroom level across from the Mile High Ballroom.

Register on the Emerson Exchange 2015 Usability Testing page and share your thoughts and perspectives to continue to make the technologies you use simpler and more intuitive.

You can also connect and interact with Christina and the Human Centered Design team through their HCD team email address. If you’ll be joining us in Denver, the HCD team looks forward to seeing you!
