I saw the new Crosby Balanced Diaphragm and Bellows Leak Detection pressure relief valve (PRV) solution at this past Emerson Exchange conference. The innovations in it were pretty impressive. The news came out today, Emerson Reinvents Pressure Relief Valves to Improve Performance and Reduce Emissions, which shares how this solution improves “…performance, safety, and reliability while reducing emissions”.

The Balanced Diaphragm innovation:

…eliminates the need for bellows in PRVs, while providing balanced operation against backpressure to lower cost of ownership and enhance performance.

The Bellows Leak Detection innovation enables:

…remote detection of bellows ruptures in PRVs, with the capability to reduce and accurately calculate volumetric emissions in real-time.

In this 4:43 YouTube video, Beyond Safety: The Crosby ™ Bellows Leak Detection Solution ensures Balanced Operation, Emerson’s Adam Attig and Ricardo Garcia show how the Bellows Leak Detection solution ensures balanced operation with a backup piston and reduces emissions by over 90% in the event of a bellows rupture. This Crosby J-Series Direct Spring Pressure Relief Valve solution provides real-time timestamped notification of bellows rupture and emissions volumetric calculation.

In one simple design, these J-Series valves provide high-quality and dependable overpressure protection for air, gas, steam, vapor, liquid, and two-phase applications. The Balanced Diaphragm enables 20% greater backpressure handling for improved reliability and is 100x more resilient than metal bellows for high-frequency cycling. Upgrade kits for these two innovations are available to enhance currently installed J-Series PRVs.
