Last week, we highlighted how energy savings could be achieved through better combustion. Today, let’s look at a way to manage energy consumption throughout a plant or production facility.

In this 3:39 video, Energy Advisor from Emerson, Real-Time Energy Monitoring, Emerson’s Barbara Hamilton describes ways to uncover, realize, and document energy efficiency opportunities through the use of an energy management information system (EMIS).

She demonstrates the Energy Advisor, a web-based EMIS application to manage energy targets with real-time information across multiple energy account centers (EACs).

She notes how energy measurements are typically scattered across many systems—control systems, electrical monitoring systems, data acquisition systems, etc. The Energy Advisor brings the measurements from these disparate sources into a central database based upon OSIsoft PI technology.

The web-based front end enables real-time and historical analytical reports to be shared across the organization to those with a stake in managing energy usage and reporting.

Barbara demonstrates how the energy streams can be configured in a hierarchical structure to show how the production units and areas contribute to the overall energy usage within the production process. She shows an example of energy cost reports for a refinery, drilling down to an individual crude unit. Using this drill-down technique, improvement opportunities can be identified, prioritized, and achieved.
