When it comes to benefitting from new technologies, pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturers often feel constrained from implementing changes due to possible revalidation regulatory requirements.

In this short 1:52 video, Industry 4.0 in Life Sciences, Emerson’s John Nita explains how technologies such as Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies have actually been around longer than the phrase describing them. IIoT technologies enable a digital transformation that helps manufacturers improve processes and workflows for improved business performance.

John notes that much of the IIoT technologies, such as wireless instrumentation, have been field-proven for more than a decade. It is now possible to gather and analyze more data than was ever possible in the past. Through a combination of data from sensors, expertise and analytics to decide a course of action, and taking action, the production process can be continuously improved, expertise captured, and efficiency gains realized.

These improvements can apply to energy usage, reliability, safety and process optimization. John shared an example of improving reliability and maintenance. Like most other process manufacturers, pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturers use rotating equipment, such as pumps and agitators. IIoT technologies improve availability and reduce maintenance costs through online monitoring and predictive health analysis.

Also, remote experts can monitor the health of the control system to diagnose, alert and respond to problems before they affect production.
